Coordinate Gulfport homebuyer preparation and check the city application route

Mercy Housing and Human Development offers homebuyer preparation in Gulfport, while city Community Development administers separate housing resources. Compare providers above, then confirm which course, counseling service or assistance file your purchase needs. Statewide MHC assistance structures are explained in the Mississippi hub.

Choose a class or individual counseling and retain your lender choice

Mercy Housing describes an eight-hour homebuyer class covering credit, assistance programs and escrow, followed by individual coaching if needed. Call 228-896-1945 to confirm registration, the next class or a one-on-one format, current fees and service eligibility. Have your lender or assistance administrator confirm that the resulting certificate satisfies its requirements before enrolling; a class description does not establish acceptance for every mortgage or city program.

Mercy's separate credit-counseling service reviews credit reports and debt-management questions. Its online intake disclosure lists industry relationships but says counseling does not obligate a client to purchase partner products or choose a particular loan program. Use counseling to prepare questions while comparing lenders independently. Ask Mercy which intake service fits your goal and how to provide the requested financial information; counseling intake is distinct from a lender's mortgage application.

Confirm a purchase-program administrator before expecting assistance

Gulfport's Resources for Homeowners and Renters page says homebuyer-assistance information will be posted after a partnering agency is secured to administer the program. It does not provide a completed buyer application route in that section. Ask Community Development at 228-868-5862 or communitydevelopment@gulfport-ms.gov about the current administrator, application status and requirements before planning around city purchase assistance. No opening date or funding reservation is established by that statement.

The city page also separates homeowner repair and tenant-based rental assistance from homebuyer assistance. Gulfport leads the HOME Gulfport-Harrison County Consortium, but that partnership does not establish identical geographic eligibility for every program. Give staff the purchase address and ask which named program covers it, including whether a property outside the city has a different administrator. Confirm the current purchase-program agreement and education requirements rather than using a repair or rental form for a home purchase.
