Find the current Roanoke preparation route before relying on assistance
TAP offers local homebuyer preparation, and Bank On Roanoke Valley provides financial education and banking resources. Use the mortgage directory above to research providers, then coordinate preparation and assistance questions with the correct organization. Statewide mortgage and grant choices are explained in the Virginia hub.
Separate TAP counseling from the assistance eligibility review
TAP describes free homebuyer education workshops and individual pre-purchase counseling, with participation available across stages of purchase preparation. Its counseling page lists Roanoke City, Roanoke County and Salem among the localities served. Call 540-283-4917 to ask about an appointment or class, the documents to bring and the completion certificate your lender will need. Access to counseling does not establish qualification for purchase assistance.
For down payment assistance questions, TAP publishes a separate contact number, 540-283-4916. Its displayed income tables are labeled effective May 2024, so ask staff for the current limits and the program serving your proposed property. Confirm the city or county boundary, assistance form, repayment conditions and file deadline before including funds in your closing plan. Neither a workshop seat nor an old income table confirms an available award.
Use banking and savings education alongside purchase counseling
Bank On Roanoke Valley's United Way page describes a partnership offering free financial education and access to affordable banking, including help developing a savings strategy. Ask which current workshop or preparation resource addresses your purchase budget. Keep general savings or banking education distinct from a mortgage program's accepted homebuyer course, a TAP counseling appointment and any assistance application; participation does not reserve a mortgage or purchase funds.
