Choose the right homebuyer resource for your Reno purchase
Reno's local resources serve different purposes: a city referral to state assistance, a Habitat homeownership process and help with housing-transaction concerns. Compare mortgage providers above, then use the contacts below for the part of your purchase that needs clarification.
Follow the city's referral to Nevada homebuyer programs
Reno's Homeowner Resources page directs buyers to the Nevada Housing Division and Home Is Possible. That is a starting point for researching state programs; the city referral does not establish a separate city cash award or show that a mortgage provider in this directory participates.
Use the Nevada state guide linked on this page for the program and education routes. When contacting a lender, identify the specific program and property address, then ask who confirms participation, assistance terms and the required course. This keeps the city's referral, the program administrator's rules and the lender's loan review from being treated as the same approval.
Plan separately for a Truckee Meadows Habitat home
Truckee Meadows Habitat for Humanity describes homebuilding in Northern Nevada, including Washoe County. Its homeownership process includes housing need, the ability to repay a mortgage and a willingness to partner through education and sweat equity. Ask Habitat about selection and financing for its homes before treating this route as assistance for a different home you have found.
The Habitat Homes page currently says its homes already have partner families and directs visitors to future application announcements. It does not provide an opening date. If this path interests you, check that page for changes and ask how the application process, home locations and participation schedule would fit your plans.
Questions to take with you
- When will information about the next homebuyer selection be available?
- What mortgage arrangement and buyer contributions apply to that home?
- How are homeowner education and sweat-equity activities scheduled?
Use the local referral for housing-transaction concerns
Reno's Affordable Housing Resources page refers questions about possible discrimination in sales and lending, as well as rentals, to Silver State Fair Housing Council. This gives buyers a contact for a different kind of question from a loan estimate or assistance application. Use the city's referral to reach the council and describe the transaction you are concerned about; ask what information it needs and what help it can provide.
