Separate Pittsburgh’s current assistance resources from older program offers

Build a lender shortlist, then identify the exact assistance program and property address you want to discuss. The Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh (URA) has distinct homebuyer programs, and an older description of one should not be used as the terms of another.

Bring the URA assistance application into your lender conversation

The URA’s Down Payment and Closing Cost Assistance Program covers eligible first-time buyers purchasing an existing or newly built home inside the City of Pittsburgh. Ask the URA to confirm the property’s jurisdiction if you are also considering homes elsewhere in Allegheny County; the lender’s office address does not determine the home’s eligibility.

The URA describes this assistance as a deferred loan, with residency conditions. It requires the buyer’s lender to complete and submit the application and also requires homebuyer education. Ask your loan officer who will prepare the package and how its submission deadline fits the intended closing date. Being listed here does not establish that a lender handles URA assistance.

Questions to take with you

  • Which repayment and occupancy conditions apply to this assistance loan?
  • What fees and education documents must be included?
  • When does the URA need a complete application for my proposed closing?

OwnPGH is no longer accepting applications

The URA’s OwnPGH page says it is no longer accepting applications. Its descriptions of earlier homebuyer grants and participant stories describe that separate program; they are not a new offer of assistance to a buyer applying today.

Use the URA’s current program pages and contact its housing team before building a purchase budget around an older advertisement or article. The OwnPGH page directs readers to the separate down-payment and closing-cost resource. That referral does not establish eligibility or reserve funds for your purchase.

Arrange a counseling conversation before choosing a course

NeighborWorks Western Pennsylvania offers homeownership counseling for people considering a purchase as well as buyers who already have mortgage preapproval. Its intake process leads to an appointment to discuss goals and next steps. The organization recommends arranging counseling before registering for its online homebuyer class.

Its education pathway combines a self-paced course with a counseling session afterward. If you are pursuing URA assistance or a PHFA mortgage, name that program when scheduling and have the lender confirm the accepted format and completion documents. A course offered by a local organization should not automatically be assumed to satisfy every mortgage or assistance requirement.
